1. Spiked Peppermint Mocha Latte

Let's start with something steamy, fresh, delicious, and perfectly sweet to lift your spirits when the weather outside is frightful! This spiked peppermint mocha coffee cocktail is wonderful for those who like the taste of hot cocoa with candy canes. It's essentially a hot peppermint mocha latte with spirits to give it a little kick!

What to know before making this spiked peppermint mocha latte?

Get the right alcohol-proof peppermint schnapps! Peppermint schnapps is a clear alcohol with a strong, peppermint flavor. It tastes a lot like candy canes but with a spicy booze finish. Usually, schnapps is consumed during the holiday season, so in December and January, it should be very easy to come by at the store. It is important to note that a few different types/strengths of peppermint schnapps are usually sold at liquor stores. Be sure to only get 60-proof (30% ABV) or 30-proof (15% ABV) peppermint schnapps for this hot coffee cocktail. This is because 100-proof peppermint schnapps is incredibly strong and can cause problems with the consistency and taste of this drink.

Spiked Peppermint Mocha Latte Ingredients:

  • 1 Shot of Espresso Per Drink (or 4 oz of Strong Freshly Brewed Coffee)
  • 2 oz (4 TBSP) of Peppermint Schnapps (Only Use 30-Proof Or 60-Proof)
  • ⅛ Cup of Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Packet of Hot Cocoa Mix Powder (Or Make Your Own with Cocoa, Sugar, and a pinch of Salt)
  • 2 Cups of 2% Milk
  • Whipped Cream, Marshmallows, and/or Crushed Candy Cane to Garnish

Directions for This Peppermint Schnapps Mocha Latte Cocktail

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, hot cocoa mix, chocolate chips, and freshly brewed espresso. If you do not have an espresso machine, simply brew some coffee extra strong (about three times as strong as usual) to make up to four drinks. (You will only need about 4 oz of strong coffee per cocktail, so if you are making more than one drink, consider brewing a small pot of bold coffee.) Whisk all ingredients together in the saucepan and let everything get nice and hot. However, do not let your mixture boil. The goal is to get the chocolate chips to melt and be completely integrated into the rich liquid.
  2. Now, stir in the 30-60 proof peppermint schnapps and immediately serve in a heat-safe glass, mason jar, or mug. Garnish with whipped cream, peppermint, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings if you wish. Enjoy!

2. Boozy Cookie Butter Latte

Turn a delicious hot latte into a boozy treat! This spiked cookie butter latte recipe is perfect for cold nights or cocktail hour with friends. It only takes about 5 minutes to make! If you want the teatoler version, just use vanilla extract instead of spirits!

What to know before making this cookie butter spiked latte?

The rich, sweet flavor of this drink comes from the cookie butter. You can use Biscoff spread, which is made up of crushed Biscoff cookies and has notes of warm spices like cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon. Though Biscoff spread is quite popular in Europe, it can be hard to find in the U.S. Not to worry, Trader Joe's specializes in selling a cookie butter that is similar to Biscoff spread, and will work in this drink. Ingredients for a Boozy Cookie Butter Latte

  • 1 Tablespoon (60-proof or Lower) Vanilla Rum (or Amaretto if you prefer Almond Flavors) Per Drink
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Granulated Sugar or Vanilla Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Biscoff Spread (Or Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ¼ Cup Brewed Espresso or Strongly Brewed Coffee
  • ¾ Cup Whole Milk Or 2% Milk
  • Vanilla Sugar, Cinnamon, or Cookie Crumbs for Garnish

Boozy Cookie Butter Latte Directions

  1. Add sugar, vanilla, cookie butter, and rum (or Amaretto liqueur if you want almond flavors instead) to a mug. Pour in your espresso or coffee and stir to dissolve the sugar and cookie butter. Heat milk with an electric milk frothing machine, on the stove, or even in a microwave for about 45 seconds, until it is hot. You want the milk to reach about 140° F and begin forming a froth at the top.
  2. Pour the milk into the mug with the other ingredients and spoon any remaining milk froth on top.
  3. Sprinkle it with vanilla sugar for garnish and serve while hot!

What Else to Know When Making Hot Coffee Cocktails for New Year?

Be careful to do things correctly when making cocktails with alcohol and milk. Milk is a staple in many coffee beverages. However, when combining milk and alcoholic spirits, it is important to select a lower proof. Any alcohol above 60 proof may cause your milk to separate and/or curdle.

You can substitute bold coffee for espresso. While espresso shots are sure to make these drinks stand out, if you don't own an espresso machine at home, it's usually fine to brew your coffee at triple strength and substitute it for the espresso shots.
