About This Brew Method
A French press is a type of cylindrical coffee pot with a plunger and a built-in filter screen. With this type of coffee maker, coffee and hot water steep for a bit and then are pressed tightly together before being separated. This creates a delicious infusion of flavor!
The French press brewing method has become increasingly popular in recent years. Perhaps, this is because of the simple beauty of the French press. Or, maybe it is because this rustic method can be used to make a smooth, robust cup of coffee without fancy gadgets or electricity!
No matter what the reason, knowing how much coffee and water to add when making coffee in this way will help you become a master of one of the most popular coffee brewing methods around. In this guide, we will go over everything you need to know!
How much coffee to use with a French press?
With this kind of rustic, non-electric coffee pot, use enough water for the size of your pot and the ratio of coffee. This means you will want to use a heaping tablespoon of grounds for every 7 ounces of water.
Be sure to use coffee that is ground to the correct consistency. A coarse "French" grind is what you want. If you aren’t confident that you can achieve this coffee grind level on your own, we sell all of our coffees in pre-ground French press styles! Once again, simply select this ground level when you are placing an order.
How to Use a French Press Coffee Maker
Using this type of coffee maker isn't terribly complicated. Here are the basics!
- You will place your pot on a dry, flat surface.
- Hold the handle, and pull the plunger out.
- Now, add a heaping tablespoon of coffee grounds. You are going to use 7 or 8 grams of coffee per 7 ounces of hot water.
- Keep in mind that you do not want your water to be boiling. You want it as hot as possible without reaching a boil.
- Now, you will carefully reinsert the plunger into the top. Stop just above the water and ground coffee line.
- Let it steep for 3 to 4 minutes. This lets the grounds infuse with the water.
- Now, it is time for the magic! Press your coffee plunger down slowly, exerting steady pressure as you push. This separates the grinds from the coffee and creates the best possible flavors with the ideal oil extraction!
- When you're done, hand wash your pot with hot water and mild soap. Use a paper towel or dishtowel to dry it thoroughly for the next use.
What size coffee grounds to use with a French press?
This secret of a good fresh cup of pressed coffee is all in the freshness of the beans and their grind level. Your ground coffee cannot be too fine or overly coarse. Overly fine coffee grounds will pass right through the filter. However, coffee grounds that are too coarse can clog up the filter and inhibit smooth, tasty, coffee uniformity.
