Costa Rica and Its Coffee
Coffee production has been important to the Costa Rican economy for hundreds of years. Arabica coffee beans directly from Ethiopia were introduced in 1779 by the Spanish colonial government. Costa Rica weather and the fantastic soil and climate allowed Costa Rican coffee to thrive in the Costa Rican rainforest. For two hundred years, the Costa Rican government actively pushed for coffee growth and export; coffee was their main cash crop for decades.
Today, Costa Rica still has the ideal climate and lush soil that made Costa Rican coffee so good. It's one of the greenest countries in the world--in fact, the country plans to become the first carbon-neutral country by 2021! It's no wonder that Costa Rican coffee is still considered one of the best! We get our Costa Rican Reserve Coffee from the Tres Rios region in the central Cartago province. The coffee plantations are just a few miles from the capital, San Jose. Coffee grows particularly well in these highlands because of the volcanic soil that stems from Irazu Volcano, which occasionally erupts and refreshes the soil with nutrients. This is the best Costa Rican coffee, hands down! Coffee from Tres Rios is harvested and wet-processed between December and March. It has an amazing body and aroma with chocolate and caramel flavors.
